Perfuming your hair in a natural way

Your hair is almost constantly exposed, which is why it absorbs bad odors (smoke, sweat, etc.) so easily. Sometimes you don’t have the chance to wash your hair every day or you don’t want to. Even though more and more perfumes for your hair are being marketed commercially, there are also some alternatives to perfume your hair.

In this article we explain how you can make them yourself or how you can choose natural alternatives with delicious fruit, flower or exotic scents. They are all alcohol-free, so your hair won’t dry out. Plus, they also have some therapeutic effects on your hair.

Tahitian monoi oil to perfume your hair

Monoi or Tahitian oil is an excellent natural product that can be used for both your body and your hair. It is extracted from pressed Tiare flowers and coconut oil, which creates a very special exotic aroma, very similar to vanilla.

We recommend it especially for the summer, because in addition to a nice scent, it also makes your hair soft and shiny and protects it from the sun’s rays. It nourishes your hair with vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.

It also moisturizes and repairs your hair. With frequent use, it is not necessary to use a conditioner after washing.

However, we do not recommend it for oily hair.

Water from flowers (Hydrolates) to perfume your hair

White flower

Hydrolates are made by distilling plants while extracting the essential oils.  This means that it is the water left over from preparing the essential oils.

It contains water-soluble elements, trace elements and a small proportion of essential oil, which means that it partly retains the aroma and properties of the flower, but is much lighter and less concentrated. Hydrolates are not yet very well known, even though they have been used from time immemorial.

We especially recommend the following:

  • Orange Blossom Hydrolate: Orange Blossom or Neroli has a very special and seductive aroma that relaxes you. It also regulates the excretion of oil by the scalp.
  • Rosemary Hydrolate: Rosemary has always been used for beauty products and hair health. It promotes circulation, prevents hair loss and helps with scalp problems. It is also an excellent cleanser and has a refreshing, spicy aroma.
  • Mint Hydrolate: This hydrolate is the most refreshing of all. It’s perfect on a hot day when your scalp starts to sweat easily. It also helps against dandruff.

It is vital that you ensure the quality and purity of the hydrosol. There are many artificial fragrances on the market, which are sold as natural ones.

rose water

Rose water is a very good flower water, traditionally mainly used in the Indian culture. It has a very delicate, feminine aroma. It controls the acidity, it regenerates and is an antioxidant. We also recommend it for special intimate occasions, as it is also an aphrodisiac.

Concentrated Lavender Infusion

Lavender has an effective cleansing and relaxing effect. It also has a wonderful aroma. It can be used very easily as a perfume for the hair by simply making an infusion of the flowers.

The perfume is very soft, perfect to use several times a day. It is also ideal for children.

Essential oils

The easiest method to perfume your hair is undoubtedly to use essential oils that you like to smell. You just need to add few drops in a glass of water, shake and apply on your hair. We recommend the following oils:

  • Ylang-ylang : An intense floral aroma. It is also an aphrodisiac.
  • Mandarin: Very sweet and refreshing. It relaxes you, improves your mood and makes you happy.
  • Bergamot : Bergamot is the key to the specific taste of black tea. It is a very special aroma and acts as an antidepressant.
  • Jasmine : Soft, delicate and relaxing. Goes very well with other aromas.
  • Lemon : Lemon gives a feeling of cleanliness and freshness. It combines very well with other citrus flavors.

How to apply them

  • Pour the perfume into an aerosol can and spray it on your hair from at least 20 cm away.
  • Distribute it evenly, without getting your hair too wet.
  • You can even massage it into your hair or comb through it to spread it better.

It is best to carry the perfume in your handbag, so that you can always apply it when you have been exposed to bad odors for a long time.
