  • The Greeks and Romans also used it to aid their digestion. This also applies to Indian Ayurvedic medicine.
  • In the West, cinnamon was initially an exotic luxury product intended only for the wealthy. Gradually, however, it became more and more popular, until it eventually became a kitchen product that everyone could use.

Indeed, it seems that Ceylon cinnamon can help stabilize blood sugar levels. However, it has not yet been proven and further research into the optimal dose is also needed.

In a study in Pakistan, the subjects seemed to benefit from the intake of cinnamon. There are three possible reasons for this. Cinnamon:

  • can help regulate blood sugar levels
  • can help balance your insulin levels, to help prevent insulin resistance. This common condition leads to problems such as high cholesterol and triglyceride levels and obesity.
  • appears to improve the liver’s ability to process glucose, a process affected by both type 1 and 2 diabetes.

Several scientific studies therefore suggest that Ceylon cinnamon can be very beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes.

Not all cinnamon is the same

It is important to use only Ceylon cinnamon for this treatment  . The official names are:

  • Cinnamomum zeylanicum
  • Cinnamomum verum

While Ceylon cinnamon may not have the most pleasant taste, it does have the most beneficial properties.

There is also another type of cinnamon, Cassia cinnamon, sometimes also called Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), which can cause unpleasant side effects. Controlling your blood sugar level with this type of cinnamon is therefore not recommended for people with diabetes.
