The features of VapoRub
The main active ingredients in this remedy are the following: menthol, camphor and eucalyptus oil. Their expectorant effect can stimulate the cold receptors in the nose, which causes a wonderfully fresh feeling in the airways and can increase airflow.
On the other hand, VapoRub can have a positive effect on dry cough. In addition, it can help relieve colds and flu symptoms faster. The application of VapoRub is topically through massage or through deep inhalation of the product, which can reduce discomfort within five minutes.
The VapoRub sold in pharmacies is not suitable for people with chronic lung diseases, emphysema, asthma, spasmodic cough, recurrent obstructive bronchitis, pregnancy and children under six years of age.
What else can you use VapoRub for?
VapoRub is not only great for supporting the relief of colds, nasal congestion and the flu, but can also be used for:
your feet
When you come home after a long day at work, you can apply a good amount of the ointment to your feet and rest your legs lifted up on a pillow, for example. You can also rub your feet before going to bed. Then put on socks and leave the ointment on all night.
Headache
This menthol and eucalyptus-based medicine can be very effective against migraines. Simply apply a little of the ointment to the sides of your head (your temples) or forehead, using circular motions. The tension and pain can thus possibly be relieved within a few minutes.
Eliminate pimples, blackheads and acne
This is not ‘scientifically proven’, but there are many people who use VapoRub for beautiful skin. Before going to bed, apply a small amount to the affected areas and leave it on all night.
Relieves muscle pain
If you exercise a lot or play a sport, your muscles will definitely hurt the next day. A good way to alleviate this problem is to massage with VapoRub. This can also improve circulation.
Reduce skin irritation
VapoRub is widely used for relieving skin irritations. Use the ointment to treat rosacea or red spots on the face. Apply the ointment as a mask before going to bed and use it in the morning, so that your skin may be better protected from wind and cold.
Recipes for Homemade VapoRub
These easy recipes consist of ingredients that are widely available and will help you make your own natural VapoRub with the same effects!
Homemade VapoRub Recipe No. 1
The required ingredients are:
- 100 ml coconut oil (can also be almond or olive oil)
- 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops rosemary essential oil
- 20 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 200 g cocoa butter
Melt the cocoa butter in a bain-marie over low heat. Once the butter is liquid, remove it from the heat and add the coconut oil (or any oil you like). Keep stirring continuously so that everything mixes well.
Finally, add the essential oils while stirring. Once all the ingredients are completely mixed together, transfer the mixture into a hermetically sealed glass jar.
Store the jar in a dark place and wait for the mixture to solidify. You can keep the mixture in this jar for a year. Use it as much as you want.
Homemade VapoRub Recipe No. 2
This recipe has more ingredients, but these are all easy to find too, so don’t worry. The ingredients are:
- 120 ml olive oil
- 240 ml coconut oil
- 170 ml beeswax (grated)
- 35 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- 30 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 15 drops rosemary essential oil
- 15 drops of lavender essential oil
- 10 drops camphor essential oil
Put all the ingredients in a pan and heat them in a bain-marie until you get a completely mixed mixture and the wax has completely melted. Pour the mixture into a glass container and let it stand at room temperature to cool and harden. We do not recommend using this ointment on children under two years old.
Homemade VapoRub Recipe No. 3
Unlike the other two recipes, this third recipe can be used for babies. Homemade remedies are a good option for relieving colds in small children because they are free of toxins or chemicals. The ingredients you need are:
- ΒΌ cup (60 ml) coconut oil
- 12 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
Heat the coconut oil and add the eucalyptus oil. Mix well and let cool. After an hour the mixture will have cooled and hardened. If you can’t find eucalyptus oil, you can also use lavender or chamomile oil (for babies under two months).
